Subaru of Hamilton Sponsors Lisa Bently in Charity Chase
The Tim Hortons Peachbud 10k will be held on Tuesday June 29th in Grimsby On. The race is the fourth race in the Subaru of Hamilton Niagara Running Series and this years race will have a new twist. The Subaru of Hamilton Charity Chase will feature eleven time ironman champion Lisa Bentley. Lisa will start the race last, seeking sponsorship for every runner that she passes along the route. Subaru of Hamilton is starting things off by pledging $1 for every runner that Lisa passes in hopes that others will sponsor as well.

“I am super excited to have Subaru supporting this ‘chase’! Like Subaru, I am “driven by what’s inside” and on the last Tuesday in June, I will be driven to catch as many runners as I can! Said an excited Lisa Bentley.

The Subaru of Hamilton Charity chase is one part of the fundraising component at the Tim Hortons Peachbud 10k/5k/1k.Last year the 1,200 runners in the combined races raised over $20,000 through their pledges and donations. The goal for the 30th anniversary event is to raise $30,000.

“This is great news for West Lincoln Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Project X-ray campaign,” said Alice Klamer, President of WLMH Foundation. “Many thanks to Subaru of Hamilton and Lisa Bentley for adding a new dimension to the Peachbud 10K Race – the Subaru of Hamilton Charity Chase. It is through partnerships such as this one that WLMH can continue to provide excellent care for the residents of West Niagara,” stated Alice Klamer.

Is the Jordan 5k the fastest in Canada
This article was featured on www.mynextrace.com

Year after year the winners of the Jordan 5k run amazingly fast times but the rest of the field runs fast as well. The 11th year of the race was no different as Josephat Ongeri batteld Derek Nakluski for the Men’s win in 14:31 and 14:37 respectively. The women’s race was won by Lucy Njeri Muhami in 16:50 followed by Josiane Aboungono 17:39.3 and Beth Wightman 17:39.7.

But even more impressive is the fact that of the 404 runners who finished the 5k- 67 broke the elusive 20 minute barrier. That is a whopping 16%. The majority of races in Ontario hover between 2% and 8%.

What makes this race so fast you might ask? The course is accurate as it is certified by Athletics Canada .It is very flat and scenic as it winds through beautiful Jordan Village with just enough turns to keep it interesting. But what makes this race fast is the runners that run it. Fast runners run fast times and that attracts more fast runners. They want to run against each other. Runners in each age group from 14 and under to 70+ run some amazing times each year. There is also an added incentive of a special medal awarded to all men who break 20 minutes and women who break 22 minutes.

Runners should be reminded that the race isn’t only for fast runners though. Jordan is nestled between Grimsby and St. Catharines in wine country and is only about 1 hr from Toronto. With its shops, boutiques, wineries and restaurants it is a great place to visit as the village welcomes runners with open arms each year..

Message from MCpl Carly Hasselman
On the 7th of November, 7 members of the Health Services Unit presently deployed in Afghanistan will be participating in the 11th Annual Tim Horton Casablanca Classic 8km. After finding this race in the iRun magazine, MCpl Hasselman contacted Instride to see if there was a possibility of participating and having the race kit sent overseas. With the go ahead from Jerry Friesen, she recruited one Physician Assistand (PA), four Medical Technicians (Med Tech) and one Search and Rescue Technician (SAR Tech).

Due to our limited space we have two options for running the 8km. The first is to run on the treadmill. The other is to run around our camp 8.5 times, with one lap being only 950m.

We are very proud serving members of the Canadian Forces from across Canada. WO John Hobbs (PA) is from Deloraine MB, posted in Esquimalt BC. Sgt Chris MacIntyre (SAR Tech) is Hamilton ON, posted to Cold Lake, AB. MCpl Hasselman (Med Tech) is from Roslin, ON, posted in Ottawa ON. Cpl Crystal Piluke (Med Tech) is from New Denver BC, posted to Edmonton AB, Cpl Marnie Musson (Med Tech) is from Edmonton AB, posted to Edmonton AB, Cpl Russ Nelson (Med Tech) is from Beaumont AB, posted to Edmonton AB and Pte Luc Zwaga (Med Tech) is from Terrace BC, posted to Edmonton AB. We are responsible for the first line trauma and health care of the soldiers working with us.

As CF soldiers, our physical fitness is always one of our highest priorities. We enjoy challenging ourselves, hence picking out this race. In the group of runners we have members that have been running races for numerous years and some that have just started.

We would like to thank the participants of this race for wearing a poppy and taking a moment to remember our Veterans and those soldiers serving today. Thank you for your support.

Doug Flis and the Run for the Bus
Last summer Doug Flis of Runner's Den Grimsby and a three time participant on Cruise To Run ran a mile for for every year of his birth. You will frequently see Doug running with his clinic members at Subaru Niagara Running series races. Doug has done this type of thing many times before. Last summer his purpose was to Run for the Bus. Doug and his wife Jennifer Johnston decided to do this after their trip on Cruise To run when they realized that many of the children on St. Lucia could not go to school simply because they couldn't afford transportation.

Doug and Jenn and the friends and family who helped Doug on his journey raised $6,500 for the Run for the Bus.

Doug recently learned of the children he will be helping with his run. Nuage Ernest 14 yrs and Nathan Ernest 11 yrs. Their mother has passed away and their father is unemployed and blind and the children are not able to attend school regularly because of inadequate finances.
The family receives financial assistance from family and friends. Both of the schools that the boys are currently attending agree that the boys are well behaved students with great potential but are unable to be at school regularly because of the family situation.

Now the boys will be able to attend school.

WAY TO GO DOUG!!!

New Road Warrior Program at Subaru Niagara Running Series
A new ‘handicap’ rating program called “Road Warrior” will allow runners of all abilities to compete in races at virtually the same ability level. The rating system is similar to that used in golf, so that a better runner with a lower ‘handicap’ rating of, say 10-15 out of 50, could run against a slower runner with a higher rating of 35 and at the end of the race their finishing times would be adjusted by the Road Warrior software to determine who was faster that day and thus be placed higher in the Road Warrior category and won points for the Road Warrior series.

Any Ontario runner is able to hold a 'handicap' rating and thus be eligible for the Road Warrior category just by having run 3 or more races in a given year. The current ratings on the Road Warrior site list over 10,000 Ontario runners who ran 3 or more races in 2007 and thus qualify for the 2008 Road Warrior category. These ratings will soon be merged with those from 2008 and then all with ratings will qualify for the 2008 series standings (and the top point getters will win prizing at the end of the year).

An initiative of the Ontario Track & Field Association in conjunction with a grant from Ontario’s Trillium Foundation, the original program concept is from British fitness experts who designed the program and software.

“The program is designed to encourage current runners to train a bit more, to enter more races and have fun with the competitive aspect of running ‘against’ others of all abilities“, according to Road Warrior manager Michael Brennan. “It’s not going to replace current road race results like overall winners or age group winners, it’s just going to add another category of winners. The ‘Road Warrior’ winners at races could well be people who never win awards at races because the 'handicap' rating creates a 'level playing field for all running that day. For the masses, this program will be fun to participate in.”

If someone improves their race speed, it may reflect in them placing better in the Road Warrior category at a given race and improve their Road Warrior rating.”

Visit the the Road Warrior [webmaster, add hyperlink to http://www.otfa.ca/roadwarrior ] site to see your rating on the master list. If you're not on the list, it's because in 2007 you didn't run three Ontario races. Ratings that include 2008 races will be available soon.

Laura Yasso - running for a cause July 19-20th
Message From Laura
You know how I hate running in circles and y'all know I hate heat & humidity so what a perfect excuse to challenge myself and raise money for a great cause in the process: I will participate in Philadelphia's first 24-hour relay race and ultra marathon. I will run the whole thing solo as a "Lone Ranger" - no relay team. My goal is to complete as many loops as possible in the 24-hour time frame starting at 10 am this Saturday and finishing 10 am on Sunday. The loops will be 8.5-mile loops around the Schuylkill River - the race is staged at Lloyd Hall on Kelly Drive (1 Boathouse Row) right behind the Philly Art Museum. If you are in the area - please come by and offer me encouragement. I will need it! The temps for this weekend will be close to record highs - 92 degrees with 76% humidity. Ugh! All money I raise will go directly to Back on My Feet, a non-profit organization that promotes the self-sufficiency of Philadelphia's homeless population by engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem.

In Memory - Nancy Sellars- Cruise To Run participant
We are saddened by the recent news of the passing of Cruise To Run participant Nancy Sellars in a tragic accident. Our condolences go out to her husband Jimi, her family and friends.

RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- An avid bicyclist who took part in a cross-country ultra-endurance event last month was fatally injured when she and another biker were hit by a car driven by a suspected drunken driver.
Racine County sheriff's officials said Nancy Sellars, 48, of Franklin, died at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in suburban Milwaukee early Thursday as the result of injuries suffered in the accident about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the town of Raymond.
Tom Chopp, who was biking with her, remained hospitalized in stable condition Thursday evening, according to a Froedtert spokesman who declined to give his name. He said Chopp's family had asked that no information on his injuries be released.
Accident reports said the two bikers were thrown nearly 30 feet by the impact when hit from behind.
Deputies said the car's driver, a 43-year-old town of Norway woman, left the scene, went to a town of Norway residence and had a friend call authorities.
She was arrested on tentative charges of driving while intoxicated.
The Journal Times of Racine reported that Sellars had been part of Team Badger Bikers in the Race Across America, a 3,000-mile bicycle race across the country. The Wisconsin team rode to benefit the Make A Wish Foundation of Wisconsin.
Sellars also finished four Ironman Triathlons, three 50-mile runs, five 50k runs, five Birkebeiner ski races and over a dozen marathons.
Another bicyclist was killed in southeastern Wisconsin on the same day.

Bart Yasso's Book - My Life On The Run

Book Description

Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed his life, or how his brush with a crippling illness nearly ended his career a decade ago. With insight and humor, My Life on the Run chronicles the heatstroke and frostbite, heartache and triumphs he’s experienced while competing in more than 1,000 competitive races during his nearly 30 years with Runner’s World magazine.

Yasso gives valuable and practical advice on how to become a runner for life and continually draw joy from the sport. He also offers practical guidance for beginners, intermediate, and advanced runners, such as 5-K, half-marathon, and marathon training schedules including his innovative technique known as the Yasso 800s.

Recounting his adventures in exotic locales like Antarctica, Nepal, and Chitwan National Park in Africa (where he was chased by an angry rhino), Yasso recommends the best exotic marathons for runners who want to grab their passports to test themselves on foreign terrain. With the wit and wisdom of a seasoned insider, he tells runners what they need to know to navigate the logistics of running in an unfamiliar country.

Yasso’s message is this: Never limit where running can take you because each race has the potential for adventure.

Course Certifications Complete
The Courses for the Subaru Niagara Running Series have all recently been certified by Athletics Canada. Bernie Conway measured the courses and is one of five Grade A measurers in Canada qualified to measure the Olympics and World Championships and is the Chief Certifier for Canada and the IAAF/AIMS Measurement Administrator for the Americas. The courses were measured following the Run Canada procedures manual and using a Jones-Oerth counter.

The purpose of the course certification program is to produce road race courses of accurately measured distances. For any road running performance to be accepted as a record or be nationally ranked, it must be run on a certified course. In addition, the certification program is very important to the average road racer. Most runners like to compare performances run on different courses, and such comparisons are difficult if course distances are not reliable. No one can truly establish a personal best if the course distance is not accurate. For more information visit www.coursemeasurement.ca

Course measurement has been sponsored by NRB Modular Building Specialists
