The Courses
for the Subaru Niagara Running Series have all recently been
certified by Athletics Canada. Bernie Conway measured the
courses and is one of five Grade A measurers in Canada qualified
to measure the Olympics and World Championships and is the Chief
Certifier for Canada and the IAAF/AIMS Measurement Administrator
for the Americas. The courses were measured following the Run
Canada procedures manual and using a Jones-Oerth counter.
Course measurement has been

The purpose of the course certification program is to produce
road race courses of accurately measured distances. For any road
running performance to be accepted as a record or be nationally
ranked, it must be run on a certified course. In addition, the
certification program is very important to the average road
racer. Most runners like to compare performances run on
different courses, and such comparisons are difficult if course
distances are not reliable. No one can truly establish a
personal best if the course distance is not accurate.

Bernie Conway-
Bernie was
introduced to measuring in 1979 or 1980. Bernie did his first
measurement in 1983 by measuring the Springbank Road Races in
London. These races were very prestigious at that time and had
runners such as Bill Rogers, Jerome Drayton, Frank Shorter, and
many other very well known runners compete there over the
years. In 1990 he attended a joint TAC (now USATF) & IAAF
Measurement Seminar which was held in Columbus, Ohio. In 1989
he was appointed as a Grade A measurer for the IAAF
(International Association of Athletic Federations) and AIMS
(Association of International Marathons and Road Races). In the
early 1990's Bernie was also appointed as a Final Signatory for
the USATF. In 2001 he was appointed Chief Certifier for Canada
by Athletics Canada and in 2003 was appointed by the IAAF and
AIMS as the International Measurement Administrator for the
Americas.
Bernie has
measured many of the U.S. Men's Olympic Trials Marathons over
the years; Columbus in 1991, Pittsburgh in 1999, and Birmingham
in 2003. He measured the 2000 Pan Am Games Marathon and
Race-walk courses in Winnipeg as well as the 2001 IAAF World
Championships Marathon and Race-walk courses in Edmonton,
Alberta and was the onsite official for these events. Bernie
was also part of the measurement team of the marathon and
race-walks for the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
